The Mediation Mandela

The BlueStar Mediation Mandala is a symbol of the mediation process. Mediation is a form of dispute resolution where typically two parties work with a mediator to resolve a dispute.

The large blue sphere is the sphere of holism. Holism conveys that the parts of a whole are in intimate interconnection, and thus holism provides a field of understanding that the whole of the parts are greater than the each part individually. Mediation works to create a more holistic and integrated existence.

The triangle is known as an equilateral triangle, thus each side and each angle are equal. Mediation is about coming together in equality.

The main relationships are between the mediator (top of the triangle) and the two mediation participants (each side of the lower triangle).

The lines at the bottom of the triangle show the reinforcing relationship that the participants have with each other. The dispute creates an extra form of an attachment between the mediation participants. With the assistance of the mediator, the participants mutually develop a solution that best works for them.

The two side lines on the triangle are not connected. This indicates that the mediator has to be independent or neutral with the two participants. This is why the line is not connected.

The center circle is called the Crucible of Agreement. This is where the needs of each participant are reflected to each other, and where the best intentions to resolve the dispute resides. The mediator and the participants converge on this Crucible to forge an understanding and agreement.
